Istanbul Museum of Archeology

Appropriatley it rained in Istanbul on September 12th. I spent a fair amount of time on the Internet and watching Turkish television. I did take the time to seek out the Istanbul Musueum of Archeology which is tucked into the same general complex as the Topaki Palace. The displays were very nicley done, and there were very, very few people. On the otherhand several floors were closed off, probably about %30 of the floor space. Still, worth the trip.

Greek Statue It is hard to tell from the photograph, but this was really, really amazing. The marble almost looks "wet", but more importantly the sculpters ability to carve the "sheerness" of the clothing was stunning. You can "see" the form of the body "though" the fabric. It really looks like someone draped the cloak over a statue, but it is all stone. Amazing. This is also a good example of how accessible most things were in this museum... no barriers, no alarms, very little was under glass, and no people... just walk right up.
Closup of Cuniform
Cuniform Tablet I don't know what else to call it, but this "tablet" was about 6ft tall. The entire service was covered with cuniform writing. This is Hittite, one of the many people who lived in parts of Eastern Turkey
