Spain Best Of... Cordoba

We drove from Granada to Cordoba to catch the train back to Madrid, but not before we saw the main attraction of Cordoba... The "Mezquita" or Mosque... which again, is a bit of a misnomer, since it is now a church! but the original design shines through the retrofit, so the name stuck.

As in Seville, the plaza with fruit trees outside the mosque survived, but the minaret lost pretty much all of its identity to the bell tower (305ft)

...and again... that strange Spanish blend of the Christian and the Muslim...

The mosque was started between 785 and 787. The mosque underwent three major expansions before the reconquest. In the 16th century a Cathedral was plopped down in the middle of the building. As in the case of the Nasrid Palace... I am glad they did not tear it down, but the styles here clash severely.
There are more than 850 pillars, many taken from Roman or Visigoth buildings... a veritable "forest" IMG_3662.JPG IMG_3664.JPG IMG_3665.JPG

and an occasional tomb in the floor...

The Moors had extensive water works in Cordoba... the wheel here is a reproduction

and the Romans got into the act with this bridge. It seems you can tell a Roman construction by the size and precision of the large foundation stones.

The walls of the Mezquita are adorned with elaborate doorways.

Rent an electric car or Segway... yes, it's blobject!

Well... that's all folks, back to Madrid, jump on a plane the next morning and back to the ATL.
